Gwadar, July 29, 2024 – Dr. Mahrang Baloch, central organizer of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), has announced an indefinite sit-in protest in Gwadar, demanding action against the exploitation and marginalization of the Baloch people.
Speaking at the ‘Baloch National Gathering’ on Sunday, Dr. Baloch addressed thousands of attendees despite strict measures by Pakistani authorities. “Today, an aware Baloch nation is present here, fully aware of who their real enemy is and who is ruthlessly exploiting their resources,” she declared, urging global powers to address the ongoing human rights abuses.
Dr. Baloch criticized the marginalization of the Baloch in their own land, highlighting the harsh measures taken by authorities to suppress peaceful political activities. “In the name of Gwadar, capitalists are brought here, but when the people of Gwadar want to organize a peaceful political program, the entire city is locked down,” she remarked.
The sit-in on Gwadar’s Marine Drive will continue until the BYC’s demands are met. “Baloch women were assaulted, their shawls torn, and tear gas shells were thrown at them,” Dr. Baloch pointed out, condemning the violence used against protesters.
In a policy statement, the BYC announced the extension of the ‘Baloch Raaji Muchi’ event indefinitely due to state violence. “Despite curfews and brutality, thousands remain at Pidi Zar Gwadar, with additional sit-ins occurring at the Talaar checkpoint,” the statement read.
The BYC reported a war zone-like situation in Gwadar and Balochistan over the past 48 hours, with a full curfew, internet and mobile network shutdowns, and indiscriminate firing upon the peaceful protesters. This violence has resulted in one death and several injuries.
The BYC outlined two primary demands: the opening of all routes to Gwadar and the release of all arrested individuals within 48 hours. The committee warned that continued violence would escalate tensions, urging the Baloch people to remain peaceful and await further instructions.
